Retrial for Innsbrook rape case begins

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - The retrial for a high-profile rape case begins in Henrico on Monday.

Jurors convicted Driton Sulejmani of rape and sodomy in February 2014, after a two day trial and two hours of deliberations. In July 2014, a Henrico circuit court judge threw out the convictions against Sulejmani, ordering a new trial because of evidence withheld from the defense.

Sulejmani is accused of attacking and raping a woman at the Shoppes at Innsbrook in July of 2013. Sulejmani testified at trial that the events of the night were consensual, but the victim says Sulejmani slammed her head into a brick wall, then sodomized and raped her.

The retrial began at 10 a.m. and is expected to last through Thursday.
