A family is praying an elderly woman rescued from a deadly house fire in eastern Henrico will survive. It happened on Mary street near East Nine Mile Road while the woman and another man were sleeping. The man died at the hospital.
When the call came in for a house, crews arrived to find a man and elderly woman trapped inside. The fire department say the woman called for help from inside the home.
"It was about a quarter to three, I think," says Patricia Humphrey who lives next door. "I looked out and I saw the firemen go down the street."
Firefighters fought through the flames to get the roommates out. Both victims went into cardiac arrest. The man died at the hospital. The elderly woman was revived and taken in critical condition.
Too distraught to go on camera, the elderly woman's family tells NBC12 she had been friends with her roommate for decades. She had lived at this home for several years. Neighbors are shaken up that something this tragic could happen so close.
"I'm very sorry that anyone has to go through that, this is a very sad day," say Frank Humphrey.
One firefighter cut himself while clearing glass from one of the broken windows. His injuries are minor.
Fire Captain Danny Rosenbaum says there were no working smoke alarms in the home. Firefighters will be back out in the neighborhood to make sure people living here have working smoke alarms.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but crews believe it started in a room on the right side of the home.
