VCU baseball stuns top-seed Dallas Baptist in NCAA opener

DALLAS, TX (WWBT/AP) -

Virginia Commonwealth used a five-run fourth inning to power past host Dallas Baptist 7-2 in the first round of the Dallas Regional on Friday night.

Freshman designated hitter Brett Hileman went 3-for-5, including a two-run single in the fourth to put the Rams (38-22) on the scoreboard.

VCU faces Oregon State in a winners' bracket game Saturday, while the Patriots (43-14) play Texas in an elimination game.

Dallas Baptist, a first-time NCAA regional host, went to the creative extremes of bringing in a helicopter before the game to help dry out the field after heavy overnight rain. The crew needed only a minor hour-long delay before getting the tournament underway.

JoJo Howie (8-6) allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings for the win. Patriots starter Joseph Shaw (10-4) gave up six runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. David Martinelli hit a solo home run for Dallas Baptist.
