CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - NBC12 is On Your Side as we partner with Bon Secours Health and Vascular Institute to bring you free health screenings. The event kicks off Thursday at 9 a.m., at Chesterfield Towne Center and is open for everyone.
We talked to Dr. Shakil Khan from the Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute about health disease and heart attacks. Dr. Khan says more young people are having heart attacks these days.
"Yes, that's true. In America, one person dies every minute of a heart attack. Half the time, the person is under age 65, and very young age, and many times the symptom of heart disease was the fatal heart attack," said Dr. Khan. "It's important to know your numbers, to prevent heart attacks. One valuable number is your 'Coronary Calcium Score' - and what that is is using a CT Scan of the chest, you can quantify how much plaque there is in the coronaries. That number is probably the best, most predicted number of a heart attack."
That CT Scan is at the hospital and won't be featured at the health fair.
"It's at the hospital, and currently it's at a special of $99," said Dr. Khan.
You can find out more information at the health fair and on the NBC12 app under "Health Fair."
The health fair runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
