ARLINGTON, VA (WWBT/AP) - VCU punched its ticket to the championship round of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship with an 8-2 victory over Rhode Island Friday evening.
The Rams will face an opponent to be determined at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday with a chance to claim its first A-10 Baseball Championship. URI will play at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday against either Davidson or George Washington for the right to face VCU.
Rhode Island jumped on the board in the top of the first inning when Chris Hess delivered a two-out, solo homerun to put the Rams up 1-0.
Ryan Olmo doubled the Rhode Island advantage when he connected for a solo homerun of his own with one out in the third inning.
VCU struck back in the home half of the fourth inning by loading the bases and then Walker Haymaker clearing them with a two-out double to make it 3-2 VCU.
The score stayed that way until the sixth inning when VCU scored four times to make it 7-2. In that inning, the Rams got an RBI single by Daane Berezo and a double by Vimael Machin that plated a pair of runs.
Sean Thompson improved to 5-3 overall after going 5.1 innings and giving up just two runs.
Tyler Wilson took the loss for Rhode Island. The southpaw went five innings and gave up five runs in dropping to 6-3 on the year.
