RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It's the unofficial start to summer, and the roads will be busier than they have been in recent years as people hit the roads to their Memorial Day destinations.
According to AAA, more than a million Virginians will hit the roads, traveling at least 50 miles from home this year.
The number of Virginians traveling this weekend is expected to be the highest in a decade - a four-percent jump over last year.
AAA says gas prices haven't typically been a huge factor in determining travel plans, but with gas prices below $3/gallon for so long, that helps travelers out a lot.
Gas prices in Virginia are at their lowest level for the holiday in five years.
