Amelia boater drowns trying to rescue man from pond

AMELIA, VA (WWBT) - A 25-year-old Amelia man died trying to save another man struggling in a private pond during a boating outing on Sunday evening.

Rodrigo Elizondo took a boat out at a private pond at the Watkins Nursery Farms where he lives on Grubhill Church Road around 8 p.m. on Sunday. He realized after he pushed off that the paddles were on shore and yelled to someone to bring them out to him. That person jumped in the water and began to struggle, so Elizondo jumped in to help, according to Game and Inland Fisheries officials.

Elizondo did not know how to swim and went under. A State Police helicopter was brought in, along with the Nottoway Dive Team and Amelia sheriffs. He was later pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation found alcohol was not involved and that personal flotation devices were not worn.
