Debate over plans for Family Dollar in Varina

VARINA, VA (WWBT) - Plans for a new East End Family Dollar are expected to go before the Planning Commission in Henrico on Thursday, but several neighbors say they don't want it.

You can expect the people who live in the North James Estates to speak out. They are asking others who are against the Family Dollar store to do the same.

The store is set to be built along New Market Road. Many people say they don't want this new Family Dollar because it will bring traffic to the Varina area at North James Estates, an area that is already seeing deteriorating roads.

If approved, it will be built at what neighbors have called a "dangerous intersection."

Family Dollar says they want to move ahead with the project, calling it an attractive place to develop.

More than 200 people have started a Facebook page, "No Family Dollar In North James," and an online petition already has 300 signatures.

Organizers say protesters are expected at Thursday night's meeting. It begins at 7 p.m. at the Henrico Planning Commission along Parham Road.
