RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

There have been quite a few passenger rail accidents in the news this year.

It's hard to forget this crash from just two months ago. The moment of impact caught on camera. It happened in Halifax County, North Carolina. An Amtrak train hit a tractor trailer that was stalled out on the tracks.

It was just one of several crashes grabbing the headlines. The most notable happened in February. Six people died and more than a dozen were hurt in a deadly metro crash in New York. The train slammed into an SUV that was stopped on the track.

There are 2,000 accidents at American railroad crossings every year. 239 people were killed last year alone. Yet when you compare the sheer volume of commuter train trips each day to the number of accidents and deaths, these crashes are still quite rare.
