HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A nearly 12-hour standoff on the Varina Enon Bridge ended when a suspect jumped into the water below, was pulled safely from the river and taken into police custody.

All lanes of the Varina Enon Bridge were closed 2 a.m. after a man called the Hanover Crisis center threatening to jump. Negotiators were called in, as were Virginia State Police crews, while drivers were forced to detour around the closed bridge.

Around 12:32 p.m., the man jumped into the water and began swimming. A Henrico Police Marine Patrol unit pulled him from the water and took him into custody. He is being taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

All lanes were back open by 2 p.m.
