CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

The Virginia Department of Transportation says Chippenham Parkway is back open following a series of brush fires along the parkway that forced lane closures while crews worked to extinguish flames.

The left lane reopened around 5:00 p.m., about an hour after ten to 12 brush fires forced all lanes to close.

Chesterfield crews say most of the fires in the county are contained, but the flames spread into the city of Richmond where crews worked to extinguish hot spots.

No one was evacuated from the area due to the fires, and the cause is still under investigation.

Drivers on Chippenham Parkway reported seeing flames and smoke on the shoulder.
