RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - American Idol finalist and Henrico native Rayvon Owen performed at the James Center on Friday afternoon.

Henderson says she graduated with Rayvon Owen from Henrico High in 2009. She's now one of the thousands of fans across the country whose votes have kept Rayvon Owen in this competition.

"I've been tweeting, facebooking, and rallying," said Henderson.

Friday Rayvon returned to his former high school as an American Idol finalist.

Before a private performance there, he serenaded hundreds at the James Center who welcomed him home with open arms.

The crowd included several of his family members who have supported Rayvon long before he was a star.

"We're very proud of him," said one family member.

He made sure to focus in on his mother during the performance who he says pushed him to audition.

"It's a tough industry to beak in to," said Rayvon.

By his 5th try, he made it through and is now one of just 4 left to claim the title. His mother has no doubt he will.

"I feel so overwhelmed like I'm almost frozen," said Rayvon after the performance.

In a quiet room after the show, Rayvon could finally take it all in.

"It's like a moment of realization, wow there's actually people out there supporting, rooting for, and pushing you," said Rayvon. "It has really inspired me to make me think I can actually win this

But for Rayvon it goes beyond the competition.

"Why not let myself be a beacon of inspiration; why not open my heart so I can help others?"

When asked if he is the next American Idol, Rayvon responded with "Yes, I am the next Americna Idol. I believe I can do this with the support Richmond and people who love me, I can do this."

To keep Rayvon alive in the competition you must vote and tune in to American idol.

Owen is one of four finalists on the latest season of American Idol. Another former American Idol finalist, Richmond-native Elliot Yamin, joined Owen onstage prior to his performance.
