R&B legend Ben E. King has died at the age of 76, according to multiple media reports.

The soul singer was best known for singing Stand By Me and also for singing with The Drifters on hits There Goes My Baby and Save the Last Dance for Me. King's publicist told BBC News the singer died on Thursday.

Stand by Me cracked the US top 10 twice. First in 1961, then again in the 1980s when the movie of the same name repopularized the song. Seven covers of the song have also made the US Billboard 100 charts over the years.

King also scored hits with Spanish Harlem, Amor, Don't Play That Song (You Lied) and Supernatural Thing - Part I.
