RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Crews responded to the Richmond International Raceway after high winds blew over a canopy, causing it to strike a person in the head and hit power lines in the area.
The call came in around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. It happened at the souvenir market across the street from RIR. NBC12's meteorologist Jim Duncan says winds hit about 25 mph at that time. Two canopies were knocked over. One canopy hit a person in the head, according to Henrico Fire, then it hit the power lines. The victim was taken to Memorial Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Chris Conely and his four year old son Grayson were in a tent at the time. He says he ran for cover when something hit him. "I don't know if it was any of the debris or pole or something, but something got me in the back but I don't care, I was just cradling him," he said.
Dominion Virginia Power fixed the power lines in about two and half hours and reopened the road.
