FREDERICKSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Steven Vander Briel has been charged with first degree murder and abduction in the homicide of a young woman in her Fredericksburg home.
The homicide investigation locked down James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg and brought out a strong police response.
Police say a young woman was found unconscious at her home in the 1900 block of Washington Avenue around 3 p.m. The victim, who has been identified as 20-year-old Grace Rebecca Mann, was transported to Mary Washington Hospital, where she died shortly after. Briel was at the home when Mann was first discovered by roommates, but he fled from the scene prior to police arrival.
He was quickly identified as a suspect due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the Mann's death.
He was taken into custody in the area of the Riverside First Church of God on Fall Hill Ave at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday evening.
Briel and Mann were both students at the University of Mary Washington. Briel lived in the Washington Avenue home as a roommate of the victim along with two other females. Police say there was no known personal relationship between Mann and Briel other than as housemates.
