Texas AD to meet with Smart Thursday in Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Sources close to the situation have confirmed to NBC12 that Texas athletic director Steve Patterson will fly to Richmond on Thursday to meet with VCU head coach Shaka Smart about the Longhorns' vacant head coaching position.

According to the Austin American-Statesman newspaper, Patterson hopes to get Smart to fly back to Austin with him in hopes of giving him a tour of the facilities and closing a deal that would make Smart Texas's next head hoops coach.

The paper also states that Patterson hopes to introduce Smart as the head coach on Friday morning, and that a deal could be in the works of up to six years, paying Smart about $3 million annually, but negotiations are ongoing.

Smart has been in Richmond all week and was in his office at the Siegel Center on Wednesday. Athletic director Ed McLaughlin stated as late as Wednesday afternoon that no school had requested permission to speak with Smart, though indications are Texas has been using a search firm.
