HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Former Del. Joe Morrissey will not be allowed to run as a Democrat in the upcoming election for the 16th Senate District, as he failed to gather enough eligible signatures to qualify, according to party officials.
Only 222 of the 972 signatures submitted were accepted, according to Press Secretary Morgan Finkelstein of the Democratic Party of Virginia.
Morrissey is hoping to challenge Senator Rosayln Dance, but will now have to do so as an Independent.
Morrissey recently moved out of Henrico to position himself for the Senate run. The move forced him to vacate his current House of Delegates seat in the 74th District.
The race for Morrissey's former delegate seat now appears to be a two-candidate race between Leonidas Young and Lamont Bagby. David Lambert expressed interest in running for the Democratic nomination, but also came up with fewer valid signatures than required. Party officials say nearly half the 151 signatures submitted were from outside the 74th district or did not qualify for other reasons.
