Police ID man killed as he and Jeep driver worked to reattach trailer

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A man was killed Tuesday as he and the driver of a Jeep worked to reattach a trailer that had become detached.

Police say Mason L. Hitt, III, 56, died at the scene.

The crash happened around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on Route 150 North (Chippenham Parkway) at Jahnke Road.

State Police said a 2004 Jeep Cherokee pulling a trailer was traveling north on Route 150 when the trailer became disconnected. The Jeep stopped in the left lane and the driver,

Steve Farag, 53

and Hitt, a passenger in the Jeep, got out to reconnect the trailer. According to state police, the Jeep's emergency flashers weren't turned on.

While

Farag

and Hitt worked to reattach the trailer, a 2005 Chrysler van traveling northbound struck the Jeep, knocking

Farag

onto the left shoulder and pinning Hitt.

State police said Hitt died at the scene.

Farag

and the driver of the Chrysler,

Audrey Trimied, 58,

were transported to Chippenham Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
