RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
In this week's Politifact Virginia Report, Congressman Dave Brat says, "Over 30 years, federal spending on education has grown by 375 percent, but test scores remain flat."
Brat made the statement because he backs the Student Success Act. It's a Republican bill that reduces the federal government's power over public schools and in Brat's view, the bill also eliminates wasteful spending.
We asked our colleagues at Politifact to evaluate the truthfulness of Brat's statement.
"The result among 17-year-olds in math and reading have essentially been flat over the last three decades," said Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter Sean Gorman.
Politifact says the Congressman's numbers are a little off, but the test scores haven't moved.
