RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Dana Bedden is one of four finalist for the superintendent position at Boston Public Schools.
A search committee unanimously recommended the Dr. Bedden and three other candidates to Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh.
The other finalists are Dr. Tommy Chang, who serves as Local Instructional Superintendent at the Los Angeles Unified School District, Guadalupe Guerrero, who serves as Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, Innovation, and Social Justice for San Francisco Unified School District, and Pedro Martinez, Superintendent-in-Residence for the Nevada Department of Education. They were chosen from a pool of more than 70 applicants as part of a year-long, nationwide search, according to the Boston Mayor's Office.
Mayor Walsh called the finalists "very strong, diverse candidates with proven track records in urban education."
The four candidates will each spend one day in Boston next week participating in a series of public interviews and panel discussion with students, parents school leaders and the School Committee. The vote on the next superintendent will be held on March 3.
A copy of Dr. Bedden's contract obtained by NBC12 when he was first hired lists his term of employment as January 13, 2014 through June 30, 2017 at a salary of $225,000. Any sort of performance incentives would kick in on July 1, 2015.
In the contract, Bedden is allowed to terminate the agreement at the end of the school year without penalty by giving notice at least ninety days before the next school year. It also allows for the superintendent to resign with the approval of the school board at any other time. If the resignation is voluntary, any salary and benefits of the contract shall stop.
Bedden came to Richmond 14 months ago from the Irving Independent School District outside of Dallas. He has also served as superintendent for Richmond County in Georgia and was a regional superintendent for Philadelphia Public Schools.
Chris Thomas sat down for an exclusive one-on-one with Dr. Bedden and will have his response on 12News at 11.
