HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - The special election embattled Del. Joe Morrissey won cost officials almost $58,000.
Morrissey resigned from his seat after he was sentenced to jail time for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, after being accused of having sex with an underage girl. He then ran for his old seat as an independent and won. Most of the money spent on the election in January 2015 was spent on renting churches as polling places, paper absentee ballots and paying poll workers.
Henrico officials said the county spent about $54,000 on the election. Officials in Richmond and Charles City said they each spent about $2,000.
As for Morrissey, his legal battles aren't over. This week, he pleaded not guilty to felony charges connected to allegations that he forged documents when he was sentenced to the jail time he's currently serving. A judge set his trial date for April 28.
