Hopewell, St. Christopher's, Henrico among Tuesday winners

Tuesday high school hoops highlights

Hopewell got 28 points from Daniel Saunders and got hot from the floor in overtime, as the Blue Devils topped Matoaca, 83-75, on Tuesday night. The win locks up the Conference 26 top spot for the Blue Devils.

The game was close pretty much the entire way, with the two teams trading blows throughout the 32 minutes of regulation. Devin Morgan scored 32 points for the Warriors in the losing cause, while Saunders scored his 1,000th career point for Hopewell.

Another thriller featured John Marshall and St. Christopher's, where the Saints survived for the 60-57 victory. The two squads were tied at 42 with 5:30 to play, when Alex Petrie hit a three pointer to give St. Chris the three point lead. Nic Sherod knocked down a three later in the frame to put the Saints ahead by six, and John Marshall missed a last second attempt to tie the game.

Henrico got 25 points from Walter Williams on Senior Night, as the Warriors pulled away from Atlee in the second half for the 86-63 win. Henrico finished the regular season 21-1 and will be the top seed in the Conference 11 tournament next week.

Benedictine got a big performance from senior C.J. Wiggins in its 85-77 win over the Miller School. Wiggins scored 46 points to pace the Cadets to the victory.

Also some news from Tuesday, George Wythe's boys basketball team will forfeit its final two games of the regular season, due to a scheduling error. The school scheduled too many contests, two over the maximum allowed of 22 games by the VHSL, but the Bulldogs will still be able to play in the postseason. They were originally scheduled to play Clover Hill and L.C. Bird this week.
