Governor McAuliffe urges qualifying taxpayers to file with Free File

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - You may qualify to file your taxes electronically for free. Today, Governor Terry McAuliffe and state leaders spoke at the Library of Virginia in downtown Richmond to encourage taxpayers who qualify to take advantage of the Free File program.

About 70% of taxpayers qualify to file their taxes electronically for free using Free File, a federal and state partnership with tax preparation software companies. Usually, people who make $60,000 or less a year qualify to use the program.

That's why Governor McAuliffe, some state legislators and leaders, and some of the participating tax software companies offered a class at the Library of Virginia, to teach people how to use the Free File program.

Not only can Free File help taxpayers navigate tax changes this year, such as changes from the Affordable Care Act's health insurance requirement, but it can help you take advantage of credits you may qualify for, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Explains Governor McAuliffe, "Twenty to twenty-five percent people who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit fail to claim it. Think about it, twenty to twenty-five percent. This one tax credit can help families get up to $6000 back from the Internal Revenue Service.
