VCU bounces back with win at George Mason

FAIRFAX, VA (WWBT) - Melvin Johnson scored 17 points to lead 18th-ranked VCU past George Mason, 72-60. The Rams improve to 18-4 on the year, 8-1 in the Atlantic 10, and 41-9 under Shaka Smart in games coming off a loss.

A 14-0 first half run by George Mason put the Rams in an early hole, but they were able to climb out and only went into halftime down 34-32. The second half saw the teams remain close early, before a 14-2 Rams run surged them ahead by nine with 11:17 to play. After Mason pulled to within one, Michael Gillmore knocked down a triple to give VCU a lead it would not give up.

The Rams fared much better in many areas than they did in Saturday's loss. They forced 18 turnovers and scored 27 points off of those turnovers, and they won the battle in the paint, scoring 32 points to the Patriots' 20.

Treveon Graham aggravated his ankle injury in the first half and did not play in the second. He was limited to just 12 minutes, but the younger Rams gutted out the win. JeQuan Lewis scored 13 points to compliment Johnson's game-high output.

VCU is back on the road on Saturday at St. Bonaventure.
