HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Investigators are working to figure out what caused a fire that sent a man to the hospital in Henrico's West End.
Crews responded around 9:45 a.m. Saturday to the 8400 block of Donovan Court for reports of a fire. Once on scene units found a man hanging out the bedroom window of a third floor apartment that was on fire.
They were able to quickly reach the victim using a ladder and rescue him from the apartment. He was transported to the hospital for burns and evaluation of other injuries.
Mike Abbamonte lives three doors down from the apartment unit where the fire is believed to have started.
"I was woken up by my neighbor, he was banging on the doors and people were yelling fire, everybody get out of the building," Abbamonte said.
Luckily Mike made it out okay. His neighbor on the other hand had to be rescued by Henrico Fire Fighters. When crews arrived they found the man dangling from his third floor window.
Firefighters had to use a ladder to get him down. Medics rushed the man to the hospital for burns and a full evaluation.
"I don't know what happened to him but I know they did a good job of getting him out and making sure that he was safe," Abbamonte said.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control quickly and prevent the spread to the other eleven apartments in the building. The apartment where the fire originated was the only apartment to suffer fire and smoke damage. The fire was marked under control at 10:08 a.m.
All the occupants of the other 11 apartments in that building were able escape on their own uninjured. The man from the apartment where the fire started will be displaced for a short period of time. The Fire Marshall's Office is currently investigating
