BRIDGEWATER, VA (WWBT) - Senior Chris Hamilton scored seven of his ten points over the final three minutes as the eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team edged Bridgewater 58-55 Wednesday evening in ODAC play for its 13th consecutive victory.
Hamilton scored the final seven points of the contest for the first-place Yellow Jackets (16-2, 9-0 ODAC).
Kyle Welty made a layup for the Eagles (9-9, 4-5 ODAC) with 3:42 left to knot the score at 51-51, the final field goal of the contest for Bridgewater. Hamilton nailed a three-pointer from the right corner with three minutes remaining to put R-MC ahead for good at 54-51. Logan Seacrist sank a pair of free throws with 2:44 remaining to pull the Eagles within one at 54-53. Hamilton faked a three and hit a jumper with 2:24 left to give the Yellow Jackets a 56-53 advantage. Welty made one of two free throws with 2:04 left to make it a two-point contest at 56-54.
Neither team scored over the next 1:30 and Bridgewater had the ball with 35 seconds left. The Eagles called a timeout with six seconds left. Ed Reddick was fouled with 3.6 seconds remaining. He missed the first and made the second to make it a one-point game at 56-55. Hamilton took the inbounds pass, was fouled and sank two foul shots with 3.0 seconds left to give the visitors a 58-55 lead. Matthew Hunter missed a three-pointer as the final horn sounded to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.
The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first four minutes. The lead was eight at 10-2 before the Yellow Jackets scored eight straight points to knot the score at 10-10 midway through the first period. Freshman Rip Engel hit a three-pointer to give R-MC an 18-14 lead with 6:35 to go in the half. BC scored six straight to reclaim the lead at 20-18 with five minutes remaining. The Eagles would take a 31-28 advantage at intermission. Senior Marcus Badger paced the Yellow Jackets with eight points.
Badger led R-MC with 16 points, while senior Joe Hassell added 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Akeem Holmes had nine points and nine boards for the Yellow Jackets.
Welty finished with 16 points for the Eagles.
Randolph-Macon continues play on the road on Saturday, as the Yellow Jackets travel to Lynchburg for a 2:00pm tip-off.
