CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Classes are canceled after a van comes barreling through a Chesterfield school Thursday morning, setting it on fire. The van was intentionally crashed into the L.C. Bird High School, according to Lt. Jason Elmore with Chesterfield Fire and EMS.
The fire started around 1:30 a.m., when the van drove straight into the building and caught fire, causing the school to catch fire as well. Now more than 1800 students are staying home Thursday morning.
School board members also came to the school to see what happened.
No word yet on the condition of the driver or a motive for the crash.
Courthouse Road is closed in both directions near Krause Road.
