Khylil James led four Meadowbrook players in double figures as the Monarchs topped Matoaca, 74-70, on Tuesday night. The win avenges an earlier season loss Meadowbrook suffered to the Warriors.
Devin Morgan led Matoaca with a game-high 38 points, including ten three pointers, as the Warriors climbed out of a first quarter hole to make this a hotly contested game down the stretch. Meadowbrook held a 26-12 lead after the first frame, but Matoaca trimmed the score to 33-31 by halftime and took a one point lead early in the third quarter.
Meadowbrook opened the score back up and was able to hold off Morgan and the Warriors down the stretch, thanks to sinking 17 of 19 free throws. The Monarchs improve to 10-4 on the season and host unbeaten Hopewell on Friday. Matoaca falls to 12-3 and will host Colonial Heights on Thursday night.
On the girls side, Cosby took down L.C. Bird, 54-43. The Titans opened up a big first quarter lead and held a 33-17 advantage at the break. The second half saw Bird pull to within eight points, but Cosby held the Skyhawks off for the eleven point win.
Jocelyn Jones paced Cosby with 20 points, while Louisville commit Taja Cole paced Bird with 18 points.
