More Bang For Your Buck: Weight-loss apps help dieters drop pounds

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - At the top of many new year's resolutions -- a promise to exercise and lose weight in the new year.

It always sounds easier than it is... but our Diva of Discounts shows you the free apps that may motivate you to get moving without spending a dime.

First up, Sworkit Lite. This free app lets you choose a workout that fits your ability and commitment. You just follow the instructions, watch the model for form, listen to the trainer and keep your eye on the timer. The app generates a different routine every time. No equipment, no appointments. For $1 you can get Sworkit Pro with more workouts.

Then there's Daily Workouts featuring shorter targeted workouts and longer full body exercises. Also completely free.

The secret to losing weight is doing the math. Counting your calories in versus calories out is simple with My Fitness Pal. Log what you eat and the exercise you do. Create your profile with your current weight and how many pounds you want to lose and the app will tell you how many calories you can take in each day as it also calculates the calories you burn through working out.

A similar app is called Loseit. It's meant to be a bite-by-bite journal. It has a massive food and nutrition database, plus you can take a photo of a products barcode and enter the data that way. Gain encouragement by connecting with others on the same quest to eat healthy and work out daily.

If you are looking for more specific food help, try Diet Assistant. It gives you suggested meals that help you meet your weight loss goals and a shopping list with what you'll need from the grocery store. And, of course, you can log your weight, add notes and follow your progress towards your goals through charts and measurement displays.
