Hopewell stays unbeaten, holds off Matoaca

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - Hopewell entered Tuesday night as the final remaining boys basketball team that had yet to lose a game in our area. It took all the Blue Devils had for them to stay that way.

Daniel Saunders scored 17 points and Hopewell held off Matoaca down the stretch to earn the 66-63 win and improve to 15-0. The Warriors fall to 11-2.

Johnnie Harrison added 16 points for the Blue Devils. Myles Markland scored 20 points to pace Matoaca in the loss, while Devin Morgan chipped in 19 points.

Hopewell will host Prince George on Friday, while Matoaca travels to Thomas Dale.

Elsewhere, Benedictine played host to nationally ranked Cape Henry Collegiate. The Cadets were able to hang with the Dolphins early, but fell into a 32-18 hole by halftime. Cape Henry would go on for the 70-50 win.
