VSU introduces Thweatt as new head football coach

ETTRICK, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State University introduced Byron Thweatt as it's new head football coach Thursday afternoon.

Thweatt takes over for Latrell Scott who left VSU for Norfolk State last month.  Thweatt, who credits Scott as his coaching mentor, jumped at the opportunity to take over his hometown team.  The Trojans won the CIAA conference championship last fall.

Thweatt played linebacker at the University of Virginia but before that was a 1996 graduate of Matoaca High School.  At his introductory press conference, Thweatt remarked that he also went to Ettrick Elementary School.

Thweatt has coached at the University of Richmond since 2007 in various capacities including linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator.  He said his plan to sustain success at VSU starts by heavily recruiting Virginia's Central region.

Thweatt also played in the NFL with the Buccaneers and Titans.  He played in five games with Tennessee in 2001.
