When a food is not kept at the proper temperature, it allows bacteria to grow faster. That's why health inspectors wrote up two local restaurants for temperature problems.
First up is Hunan Cafe at 9117 Staples Mill Road in Henrico. It had six critical violations, plus another seven non-critical. The report says one problem was a repeated violation from a previous inspection: shrimp in the make table was not being kept cold enough. The inspector wrote that the shrimp was relocated and three other violations were corrected during the inspection.
Moving to Hanover, Portofino Ristorante Italiano at 16618 Mountain Road had four critical violations, including that pizza sauce and ricotta cheese in a prep unit also were not being kept cold enough. The report says they were moved to a reach-in cooler and an employee adjusted the temperature on the prep unit. In fact, all violations were corrected while the inspector was still on site.
But inspectors say the food is more than yum yum at Yum Yum Good Chinese Restaurant at 5612 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. It's prepared properly. The restaurant wins the NBC12 Hall of Fame Award for acing 5 health inspections. Yum Yum hasn't had a single critical violation in two years.
