HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - Hopewell entered Monday night as one of the few remaining unbeaten boys basketball teams in the area. Thanks to a gritty effort, the Blue Devils stayed that way.
Hopewell got all it could handle from Meadowbrook, but held off the Monarchs for a 77-73. The Blue Devils would trail, 35-31, at the half, but opened the third quarter with a run to take the lead. Deonte Jones paced Hopewell with a game-high 27 points, while Daniel Saunders chipped in 25 points.
Meanwhile, Highland Springs picked up its second straight win and improved to 10-1 with a 65-28 dominant win over Deep Run. The Springers had opened up a 30-10 lead by halftime and never looked back. A.J. Gaston scored 22 points to lead Highland Springs in the win.
