Condition of historic Petersburg theater closes South Ave.

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

Out of concern for the condition of a historic theater, Petersburg officials on Monday decided to close South Avenue between Halifax streets.

The City of Petersburg reported via its @PetersburgV Twitter account that a possible building collapse at the site of the former Rialto Theater has closed that section of South Avenue

The building at 108 South Ave. has been abandoned, but the city has been aware of its deteriorating condition and closed the street Monday as a precaution. Built in 1923, the Rialto Theater was first used as a movie theater but later hosted such music legends as James Brown, Sam Cooke and Chubby Checker.

The initial tweet went out to followers around 3:20 p.m. Monday.

A followup tweet said the city is waiting on a report from the city engineer about the condition of the building.
