Richmond grand jury indicts teen in Marty Cobb case

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Richmond teen faces first-degree murder, strangulation and malicious wounding counts in the death of an 8-year-old killed while trying to protect his sister.

The grand jury indicted Mairese Washington Monday on the counts in the attack on Marty Cobb in May 2014. Cobb was trying to save his 12-year-old sister from being sexually assaulted by Washington when he was killed, according to family members. Washington carried the bloodied girl back to her Brandon Road home in May, but blamed someone else for the attack, according to the children's mother.

Commonwealth's Attorneys dropped the charges against the teenager in November to get more time to get lab results back on evidence in the case.

Washington was set to enter a plea in the case in September, but the two sides could not come to an agreement.

A judge ordered a mental evaluation for Washington in the case last year.
