BRONX, NY (WWBT) - VCU's road to a hopeful Atlantic 10 title started Sunday afternoon on the road, and it tipped off on a high note, as the Rams topped Fordham, 75-58.
Shaka Smart's club started strong, opening up leads of 10-2 and 27-12 in the first half, but Fordham would claw back, trimming the deficit to just four at 30-26. VCU would close on a bit of a surge to go into the locker room leading 37-30.
The second half saw Fordham open on a 7-1 run to trim the VCU lead to just one, but VCU responded during the next six minutes with a 14-0 run to slam the door.
Treveon Graham and Briante Weber both scored 14 points to lead a balanced Rams attack. Melvin Johnson added nine points in his return to his hometown of the Bronx, while Mo Alie-Cox and Terry Larrier each chipped in eight points (Larrier is also a Bronx native). Graham and Weber each grabbed seven rebounds, while Weber added six steals, moving him into a fifth place tie on the all-time NCAA steals list with 349.
VCU's defense put together a solid showing in the turnover department, forcing 28 Fordham giveaways. 21 of those turnovers were steals. The Rams forced Fordham into more turnovers than it had field goals on the afternoon (20).
The Rams return home on Wednesday when they host Atlantic 10 newcomer Davidson at the Siegel Center. Tip off is set for 7:00pm.
