Maryland sheriff's deputy killed in King George crash

CHARLES CO., MD (WWBT) - A Charles County, MD, sheriff's deputy was killed Sunday in a single-vehicle crash in King George County.

Virginia State Police said the driver, Jamel L. Clagett of King George died at the scene of the crash at 7:45 a.m. Sunday on Route 218 (Caledon Road). State police said Clagett, 30, was a 10-year veteran of the Charles County Sheriff's Office, assigned to patrol operations. He was on his way home from work when his 2013 Ford Taurus ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said Clagett will be remembered for his acts of kindness.

The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the crash investigation.
