Atlee linebacker Ricky DeBerry started out with more than 70 college scholarship offers. Friday morning, he had it narrowed down to one.
DeBerry verbally committed to the University of Oklahoma during a ceremony in the high school auditorium. One of the most sought-after recruits in Virginia, the Raiders' linebacker chose the Sooners over his other semifinalists, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Penn State, Texas A&M, Michigan State and Tennessee.
The senior said Oklahoma turned out to be the right fit because of his relationship with the coaching staff, as well as the 3-4 defensive scheme the Sooners play, which allows linebackers to come off the edge frequently, which certainly appealed to DeBerry. He's also the first linebacker commit in the Oklahoma class of 2015, and with many linebackers having departed from last year's team, DeBerry sees a good chance to get some early playing time.
DeBerry also says head coach Bob Stoops spoke with him about more than football. He showed interest in DeBerry's life and development as a person as well, which put the Sooners over the top.
