Son of former governor McDonnell charged with DUI

The son of former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell was charged with driving under the influence on Thursday in Virginia Beach.

An officer stopped Robert "Bobby" McDonnell at 3:30 a.m. while he was driving in the 2500 block of Sandpiper Road in Sandbridge, according to Virginia Beach Police. The 23-year-old was charged with drunk driving and refusing to submit to a breath test, officials said.

His twin brother, Sean, was found guilty last year of public intoxication, according to Charlottesville General District Court records.

Sean was 21 years old in July 2013 when an officer believed he looked drunk and took him into custody.

Robert's arrest comes as his mother and father await sentencing stemming from their corruption convictions year.

Sean and Bobby are both students at the University of Virginia and graduates of Deep Run High School.

Bobby was released from custody around 11 a.m., officials at Virginia Beach City Jail told WAVY.

The McDonnell family has a vacation home in the Sandbridge area.
