RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Treveon Graham scored 21 points and pulled down eleven rebounds, and hit a key three-pointer down the stretch to lead VCU past 23rd ranked Northern Iowa, 93-87, Saturday night at the Siegel Center. With the win, the Rams improve to 6-3 on the season, 4-1 against ranked opponents all-time at the Siegel Center.
VCU would fall into an early 20-11 hole, but the Rams would charge back and hold a 37-35 lead at the break. The second half would see Shaka Smart's club open up an eleven point lead, but the Panthers would charge back and take the lead with less than a minute to go. Graham would answer, hitting the game tying lay-up, and Briante Weber would come up with a key steal to halt a potential game-winning possession by the Panthers. UNI ended regulation on a 19-8 run.
The Rams would hold the lead for most of the first extra session. VCU led 86-83 late in the frame, but Matt Bohannon came up with a clutch triple for the Panthers, forcing another overtime. Doug Brooks would start the second OT off with a three-pointer, and with the Rams up 86-85, Graham would knock down a three from the top of the key to put the game out of reach.
Weber would chip in 14 points and six steals, as he now has 330 career steals, ranking him 16th on the NCAA all-time list. Melvin Johnson scored 12 points, while Mo Alie-Cox posted a nice performance, scoring nine points and pulling down seven boards.
VCU is back in action on Tuesday, as the Rams host Belmont at the Siegel Center at 7:00pm.
