L.C. Bird shoots for third straight state crown on Saturday

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

L.C. Bird head coach David Bedwell does his best to keep his Skyhawks on a routine from week to week. Something that's become part of their yearly routine has been winning state championships, and they'll look to become just the eighth team in VHSL history to claim a third straight state title on Saturday.

Bird has won 41 of its last 43 games and enters the contest at 12-2. The Skyhawks are facing a Tuscarora team that is 14-0, has beaten 13 of its 14 opponents by double digits and is in just its fifth season of varsity football.  Bedwell says that the Huskies will be the most physical team his squad has faced this season and that Tuscarora and Bird are very similar in the way they play.

With a win, the Skyhawks would be in a class by themselves in the area. No former Central Region team has ever won three outright state championships. Hopewell and Petersburg have each won three titles, but both have shared a respective title, the Crimson Wave in 1944, the Blue Devils in 1950.

L.C. Bird and Tuscarora kick off at 12:07 in Charlottesville on Saturday. Click on the above video to view our preview of Bird's title game.
