HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Shaka Smart has called Darius Theus the best leader he's ever had. Now the former VCU guard is taking that leadership to the coaching ranks.
Theus is the newest assistant coach for Hunter Thomas at Mills Godwin High School. After returning to Virginia after playing professionally for a year in Holland, the former Ram returned to Virginia to be closer to his family. Coaching is giving Theus a chance to stay in the game he loves and pass down some of his experiences.
Smart and Theus will both tell you that the guard wasn't always the best leader. Theus says he was a "knucklehead" his freshman year, and Smart said he wasn't very coachable at first. He learned quick, leading to a complete turnaround, and his leadership is still referenced today in the halls of the Siegel Center, and he says he's using his freshman year as an example with his current players and preaching maturity.
Theus hopes his playing days aren't done. He's still working out and staying in shape, but this offers a great way to share his skills. He says he wants to stress how important a player's approach to the game is. When his playing days are behind him, he hopes to become a permanent coach at some level.
