RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU has fared well against ranked opponents at the Siegel Center. The Rams are 3-0 against ranked teams on their own floor and will look to continue that trend against the highest-ranked team to ever visit the venue.
Seventh-ranked Virginia visits VCU on Saturday. The Cavaliers are a perfect 8-0 and have won seven of those games by double digits. They're coming off a 76-65 win at Maryland and are second in the nation in points allowed, giving up 43.6 points per contest. The Cavs have three players averaging in double figures in scoring: Justin Anderson (15.1), Anthony Gill (12.4) and Malcolm Brogdon (12.3).
VCU enters with a 5-2 record and secured a hard-fought win at Illinois State on Tuesday. The Rams were ranked as high as 14th in the country this season before suffering two losses last week. The Rams are averaging 77.6 points per game on offense. Treveon Graham leads the team with 17.4 points per contest, while Melvin Johnson averages 17.1 points per game. Briante Weber is posting 3.8 steals per game and 5.8 assists per outing.
The game will be a match-up of two contrasting styles. VCU applies its Havoc pressure and hopes to speed up opponents into making mistakes and turning the ball over. Virginia plays at a slower tempo, and Tony Bennett's pack-line defense in the halfcourt has proven very successful as well.
Last season, VCU edged the Cavaliers, 59-56, on a last second three pointer by Graham.
Tip-off is set for 2:00 on Saturday.
