Monacan's football team will take the field on Friday in the 4A state semifinals, thanks in large part to the efforts of its coaching staff. A good portion of that coaching staff put in film study and planning after weekly Sunday family lunches.
Head coach Jim Henderson knows two of his assistants a little bit better than the others. His younger brother, Bobby, is Monacan's defensive coordinator, while his father, Herman, serves as the Chiefs' linebackers' coach.
Jim is in his second year as the Chiefs' head coach and has turned the program around. They've won eleven games for the first time in school history and are in the midst of their best season ever. Bobby is in his first year as big brother's assistant. He joined the staff after becoming a history teacher at the high school. Herman has more than 30 years of coaching experience, including 20 years as the defensive coordinator at Hopewell.
Monacan kicks off at Lake Taylor on Friday at 7:30pm. Click on the above video to view Matt Estreich's story on the Chiefs' coaching family.
