Richmond man charged after wrong-way chase on I-95

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Richmond man is being held on bond, charged with felonies after an accident Sunday morning that State Police say was the result of a reckless driver driving the wrong way on Interstate 95.

State Police said Mario Marvel Pegram is charged with eluding police, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. Pegram, 33, of the 8200 block of Uxbridge Court in Richmond, was driving a 2003 Nissan Sentra northbound in the southbound lanes of northbound Interstate 95 early Sunday morning. According to police, around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, a state trooper attempted to stop Pegram for driving faster than 100 mph at mile marker 16 in Sussex County.

Pegram refused to stop, eluding state police and driving erratically to avoid being stopped. State police said as Pegram eluded police, he crossed over the grassy median and began driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95. Troopers stayed in the northbound lanes, but continued to follow Pegram. He lost control of his car and overturned several times, according to authorities. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, but Pegram suffered minor injuries. He was treated at Southside Hospital in Petersburg before being taken to Southside Regional Jail.
