WILLIAMSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg fell into a deep hole early and could not climb out, falling to Lafayette, 49-8, in the 3A-East semifinals (state quarterfinals) on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Wave started the day with the ball, but fumbled on the second play of the game, which led to a Rams touchdown, giving Lafayette the 7-0 lead 30 seconds into the game. Rams' quarterback Brendan McGinty would add a quarterback keeper for a touchdown in the first and another in the second quarter, giving Lafayette the 19-0 lead at the break.
McGinty would add another score in the first drive of the third quarter, and the Rams never looked back, cruising to the win.
Peterburg's season ends with a 6-7 record. It's the first time the Wave has reached the state quarterfinals since 1979.
