Hermitage-L.C. Bird becoming late-November tradition

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - High school football teams always have the goal of practicing on Thanksgiving. It means they're still in the hunt for a state championship, while most other teams have already handed in their equipment. Like Thanksgiving, Hermitage and L.C. Bird meeting in the playoffs is also becoming a late-November tradition.

For the fifth straight year, the Panthers and Skyhawks will meet in the postseason. 2010 and 2011 saw Hermitage end Bird's season, while the Skyhawks grabbed some revenge the next two years, en route to their back-to-back state titles.

Hermitage enters with a 12-0 record and topped Manchester, 40-28, to reach the state quarterfinals. The Panthers have never won a state title and hope to move one step closer by topping the team that sent them home the last two years.

Bird is 10-2, and snuck by Highland Springs, 25-23, to advance. The Skyhawks have won eleven straight postseason games.

Both teams have a good amount of playoff experience. Hermitage's seniors have eight playoff games under their belts. The Skyhawks' seniors have played in 13 postseason contests, winning 12 of them, including the two state crowns.

Kickoff is set for 7:00pm on Friday at Hermitage. The winner will move on to face either Salem or Norview in the state semifinals.
