Following a regular season-ending win over Colonial Heights, Petersburg earned the 12th seed in the 3A East playoffs. The Wave opened its postseason with a 46-38 upset over Kettle Run, and followed that up last Saturday by taking down fourth-seeded Poquoson, 56-16. It was a convincing win that saw Petersburg hold a 42-10 halftime advantage.
Now the Crimson Wave takes aim at unbeaten Lafayette, the top seed in 3A East with a record of 12-0. It's a match-up that sees Petersburg in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1979, according to athletic director Bill Lawson.
Perhaps the most amazing part of the success is the numbers the team is winning win. Josh Wallace has just 24 players on his active varsity roster, with most playing on both sides of the ball. Several injuries really crippled the Wave for a good part of the regular season.
Petersburg kicks off at Lafayette on Saturday at 2:00pm.
