RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Villanova used a 16-0 run early in the second half and never looked back, handing VCU its first loss of the season, 77-53.
The first half was close the whole way, with the teams trading leads late in the frame and the Wildcats heading into the locker room up 32-30. The Rams would charge out of the gate in the second half, scoring the first six points and prompting an early Villanova time out. That's when the wheels fell off. The Wildcats stormed out of that time out and responded with the 16-0 run and cruised to the 24 point win.
VCU shot 37 percent from the field, while the Wildcats shot 50 percent, 58 percent in the second half to surge ahead. Shaka Smart's team only connected on two of its 17 three- point attempts. Melvin Johnson and Briante Weber scored 13 points each to lead the Rams. Mo Alie-Cox chipped in ten points in the losing effort.
The Rams will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they face Oregon in their final Legends Classic game at 7:30pm.
