RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond has earned a berth in the 2014 FCS playoffs. The bracket was announced on Sunday morning, with the Spiders hosting Morgan State on Saturday at 1:00pm.
This marks Richmond's first playoff appearance since 2009. The Spiders finished the regular season 8-4, capped off by a 34-20 win at William & Mary this past Saturday. Four teams from the CAA advanced as part of the postseason field (New Hampshire, Villanova, James Madison).
For Danny Rocco, it marks his first playoff berth as a head coach. On five previous occasions between his time at Liberty and Richmond, his teams have finished 8-3 or better, but have been left out of the postseason field. Rocco said Sunday that it's been very hard for him on many levels in that regard.
No player on the Spiders' roster has any playoff experience, but they're plenty motivated. 22 seniors are on the roster, and they remember the 2011 season, in which Richmond finished 3-8 the year before Rocco's arrival. Seniors Reggie Barnette and Austin Gund both said that they carry that season with them as motivation, as they have for the last three years.
Fellow CAA member James Madison will host Liberty in first round action. With a win, the Dukes will face conference foe Villanova in round two.
With a win on Saturday, the Spiders would advance to face Coastal Carolina on December 6.
